The Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is testing a drone with an infrared camera
designed to monitor pipelines in the country for vandals, Vanguard reports.
It is said that the country lost over N1.2 trillion to oil theft in 2014. The country continues to incur heavy costs in a bid to repair vandalised pipelines and losses hits 50,000 to 60,000 barrels. NSCDC has therefore found a new way to fight back with the development of the drone.
The equipment will be tested in the coming weeks to catch perpetrators in action, General AAbdullahi Gana, NSCDC Commandant told newsmen. He said NSCDC took this bold step in line with the change crusade of Mr President.
The new drone which will be flying at an altitude of some 150 meters (492 feet), will be able to keep watch for more than 80 minutes at a time, quietly whizzing through the sky at up to 54 km (33 miles) per hour. It can also be put on autopilot function for stretches as long as 40 kilometers, the CG assured.
It is outfitted with an infrared camera and the NSCDC logo will use GPS to document the times and places where vandals are observed making it possible to prosecute the offenders.
