AN estranged wife of son of former President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Mohammed Badamasi Babangida has petitioned President Mohammadu Buhari over an alleged attempted forceful abduction of two of her children by her ex-husband from their school in Abuja.
Ms Yakolo Indimi, in a petition dated November 9, 2016 and signed by a former Attorney General of Nasarawa State, Mr. Innocent Lagi, alleged numerous acts of arbitrary abuse of power and privileges by Mohammed Badamasi Babangida using the Nigerian police, blackmail and threatening of judges handling the issue of the custody of their children.
The petition has been relayed to President Buhari, the National Assembly, Inspector General of Police ( IGP), Director DSS, the Sultan of Sokoto, Supreme Council of Sharia in Nigeria, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Ms Indimi had alleged that on November 9, 2016 at about 3pm Mohammed Badamasi Babangida attempted, as he had done previously, to forcefully take her children using officers of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) from their school at Katampe, Abuja.
The petition alleged that policemen involved are Sunday Ubua, whose phone number was provided as 08033129778, and Musa Maji with Police identification No. 158593.
According to the petitioner, Mr. Babangida began his acts after his divorce with his wife in December, 2015 when he allegedly lured her to visit his father in Minna with the kids.
The petitioner alleged that after the visit, he unlawfully detained his ex-wife in his house and refused to let her go. When he eventually did let her go, he would not let her go with her children; Maryam Mohammed Babangida (10 years old), Fatima Mohammed Babangida (nine years old), Ibrahim Mohammed Babangida (seven years old) and Mohammed Mohammed Babangida (five years old).
The petition read: "Our client had reached out severally through relatives and emails to Mr. Babangida to reconsider his actions and let her have the children back to no avail. Mr Babangida eventually returned the four kids to our client in June 2016.
"On the 24th of July 2016, Mr Babangida broke into our client’s sister’s house in Maitama Abuja and forcefully abducted two of our client’s children; Fatima nine (9) years old and Mohammed five years old which he has failed to deliver custody of to our client.
"Mr Babangida continued this assault and intimidation on our client and her family including sending people to attack our client’s sister at her Sunnyvile residence in Abuja".
Ms Indimi, after the incident, filed a suit which is still pending at an Abuja Area Court for the custody of the four children as provided under Islamic law.
However, Mr. Babangida also filed a suit at an Upper Sharia Court in Minna seeking the custody of the kids.
"Because of the actions and threat of Mr Babangida; our client’s family had to seek the protection of the Police and has been provided a round the clock police protection".
"While we are on our client’s behalf filing and pursuing appeals against a bench warrant for her arrest from the Upper Sharia Court 1, Minna which arose from purely a civil matter of custody, we are compelled to address this petition to you because our client’s earlier complains and petitions to the police have neither been investigated nor seem to be getting any attention while the police is consistently being used by Mr Babangida to terrorise our client," the petition further read.
