A
prison guard with Nigeria Prison Services (NPS) in Maiduguri, the Borno
state capital was on Thursday shot and killed by three suspected Boko
Haram gunmen, and bombed the Sports Utility
Vehicle (SUV) he was
returning in with children from Innovative Primary school of Bolori
ward.
The
suspects, according to an eyewitness, evacuated three children from the
prison guard’s vehicle, before detonating the bomb on the SUV and set
it ablaze and fled on a motorcycle to the neighbouring wards of
Pompomari and Bulunkutu wards.
Confirming
the killing and bombing of prison guard and vehicle, the state’s
comptroller of prisons, Usman Maina Kaina said: “Yes, it has happened
today at about 12.45pm. I received a distress call from one of our
officers on field that three suspected Islamists sect members on a
motorcycle shot and killed our prison guard, while returning from school
with three children. After killing him, they set the vehicle ablaze by
bombing it after evacuating the children.”
He
said the prison guard was trailed right from the office on Kashim
Ibrahim Road to the Innovative Nursery/Primary School in Bolori ward,
before the feared Islamists gunmen and bombers killed him along with the
destruction of vehicle by 1pm.
The
police also told The Guardian that there was a distress call from the
Ibrahim Taiwo Divisional Police station, confirm that one of the prison
guards was shot and killed while returning from school with his children
to the house on Thursday.
Spokesman
of the Borno state police command, Abdullahi Lawal said that the
killing of the prison guard brings to four the total number prison
officials killed this month in the serial attacks and killings by
suspected Islamists gunmen and bombers.
