A man in his mid – 20s simply
identified as Timi, (surname withheld), has allegedly committed suicide by
hanging himself on a rope tied to the roof of an uncompleted building behind
his friend’s compound, as residents of the compound deserted the area for fear
of being arrested by the police.
The incident, which took place at No. 1 Chief
Odeli Ofoluwafor Street, in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State,
took residents of the area by surprise, as Timi was to have come to visit his
friend before the thought of taking his life enveloped him.
Although there are mixed feelings and
reactions to his evil act as many claimed that he allegedly committed suicide
over disagreement with his friends who called him names.
It was gathered that Timi came to visit his
friend whose name was not made available to our reporter only for him to take a
stroll behind the compound and hung himself.
Sources within the area reportedly said the
lifeless body of the deceased was seen dangling in an uncompleted building
behind the premises moments later, to the surprise of neighbours. The shocking
sight of the lifeless body of Timi prompted residents of the area to raise the
alarm that attracted others.
As at the time our reporter visited the
scene, the entrance gate to the compound was locked on the alleged instruction
of the police from “B” Division in Warri. However, a source who spoke on
conditions of anonymity, said, “Timi does come to visit one of his friends who
come here occasionally. I don’t know the name of the friend. We only saw the
body of Timi dangling in a rope that day at about 10am and we called the police
from “B” Division, who came to carry the dead body to the General Hospital
Mortuary in Warri. Police say we should not allow anybody to come inside the
compound. That was the instruction”.
Contacted, the Divisional Police Officer,
“B” Division, CSP Anietie Eyoh declined comment on the matter as he referred
our reporter to the State Police Command, but a source close to the station
confirmed the incident, saying that the police was investigating the matter.
The Delta State Police Public Relations
Officer DSP Andrew Aniamaka when contacted sought for more time to confirm the
incident and up till now has refused to call back.
