The
Nigeria Army (NA) has said that the two Military policemen who were caught on
video molesting one Chijioke Raphael Uraku who is physically challenged, in
Onitsha, Anambra State, on Tuesday, may
be dismissed from service.
The
Deputy Director, Information, 82 division of the Nigeria Army, Enugu, Col Musa
Sagir accompanied by Col Idongesit Akpan, who briefed newsmen at the 302
command, Onitsha yesterday, however said
the army regretted the actions of the perpetrators.
Meanwhile,
the two men had since been tried by the 302 command in Onitsha led by Col Akpan,
even as they were referred to the higher authority for further disciplinary
measures.
According
to him,” the leadership of the army under Chief of Defence staff, Maj- Gen
Tukur Brutai frown at the action of those soldiers and does not encourage it
and we are also ready to sanction any person whenever it occurs”
The commander 302 Army regiment in
Onitsha, Col Idongesit Akpan, told reporters that the Army stood firmly with
the public, while assuring that such dastardly act would never occur again.
Col Sagir, said what they were doing
was not a compensation, rather to show that the Army was responsive and caring.
However, there was mild drama at the
302 command, Onitsha when Uraku from Ikwo, Ebonyi State, refused to remove the
military camouflage he was wearing despite appeals from the senior army officers
and the state government representative.
He requested the military hierarchy
to as a matter of urgency, give him a complete military Uniform, even as rejected
some new cloths bought for him by the command.
Uraku who described himself as the
friend of the military, though incoherent in his statements, however claimed
that he used to go on patrol in the area he commands, declaring himself as a
commander also.
The Army senior officers awarded him
the title “colonel” and commander of the Egerton command, new market road but
said it would be difficult for him to receive the Uniforms.

The state commissioner for women’s
affair and social welfare, Dr Victoria Chikwelu, who represented the state Governor,
Dr Willie Obiano at the occasion later persuaded him to accept the gift.
Chikwelu, commended the Army for
their concern, just as she condemned the dastardly act of the military
personnel, saying that the Governor was equally concerned and willing to see
and speak with the victim.
